Why I Recommend Snipe-IT

A free, open-source asset and documentation platform I would point anyone toward.

If you need a free or open-source place to track your hardware and IT assets, start with Snipe-IT. It is the tool I reach for and the one I would recommend to just about anyone.

Snipe-IT does the unglamorous work of asset management genuinely well: check-in / check-out, assignment to people and locations, licenses, and a clean audit trail of who has what. It is straightforward to stand up, it stays out of your way, and it gives an organization a real source of truth for its hardware instead of a spreadsheet that goes stale.

For a free or open-source documentation and asset platform, Snipe-IT is where I would start.

Being open source matters here. There is no per-seat pricing pushing you toward shortcuts, you own your data, and the project is actively maintained with a helpful community behind it. For a small or mid-size IT shop that wants to get organized without a procurement cycle, that combination is hard to beat.
